Nowadays jumps meetings are held all year round but the proper National Hunt season actually runs from mid-October with the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby the first big race. The first major meeting comes halfway through November, when Cheltenham stages its Open meeting, featuring the Paddy Power Pink Gold Cup.

The Cheltenham Festival in mid-March is the focus of the season and has recently been increased to a four day event and all the top horses from the UK an Ireland are on display in what really is the world cup of jumps racing. The action then tails off after every housewifes favourite race the Grand National in April.

Jump races can be broadly divided into steeplechases and hurdle races. In steeplechases, which are run over distances from 2-4½miles, horses have to jump fixed fences, which are at least 4½ft high.

Hurdle races, run over distances from 2-3½m, involve smaller, less rigid obstacles, at least 3½ft high, which often collapse when hit by a jumping horse.

National Hunt has a much less glamorous reputation than Flat racing and the prize money on offer is considerably less. Even so many followers would argue its relatively small financial rewards and lack of airs and graces make it more of a true sport.

Each Day our Jumps Racing Specialist provides members with one or two bets from either the UK or Irish national hunt cards.
